What
is Acupressure?
Generally
thought of as Acupuncture without needles, Acupressure has its roots
in the ancient traditions of Chinese medicine and is ideal for anyone
who wants the benefits of Acupuncture, but is wary of the insertion
of needles.
Acupressure,
and its Japanese counterpart Shiatsu, is based upon the principle
of vital energy, qi, running through the body via channels, called
meridians. If the energy flow becomes blocked or sluggish, or races
too fast, then ill health will ensue. The aim of Acupressure, and
Shiatsu, is to restore balance and stability to the energy flow.
During
the therapy session the practitioner will stimulate the pressure
points, thereby inducing the correct flow of energy throughout the
body. This also has the effect of diffusing and draining the lactic
acid and carbon monoxide that can remain in muscle tissue, causing
stiffness, discomfort and lack of energy.
Healthy
stimulation and regulation of energy flow can assist with all manner
ailments including:
stress
emotional
and psychological problems
chronic pain
including back pain, migraine, rheumatism, and arthritis
asthma, constipation,
insomnia, sciatica and impotence.

How
is a Acupressure session conducted?
After
the initial assessment the client lies on a couch or mat and the
practitioner will carry out a physical diagnosis of their energy
flow and will stimulate by pressing, specific pressure points along
the meridians. The treatment may also involve some stretching. Some
pressure points may be tender but the therapy is not generally regarded
as painful.

How
many Acupressure sessions will be needed?
Its
difficult to say because of the wide range of conditions which may
be treated and the fact that all clients are different and will
make progress at different rates. Often improvements will be noticed
after just one session, however a number of sessions (maybe four
or five) are advisable to gain full benefit.
Many
clients find it valuable to continue with occasional sessions at
perhaps eight or twelve weekly intervals.
